RESULTS OF THE 2011 REDWINGS MEMORIAL EVENTSWith walls averaging 4 to 6 feet, and often above 8 to 10 feet, all contestants had ample waves to show their skills and we ran the entire contest in just one day. Swimming 4 heats in very strong current Kaleo Garlasa stood out with the highest scoring ride of the day (9 points), the highest total points in any heat for his 3 scored waves from the 3 judges (68.5) and he won both is own Senior Men's age group and the Pro Open event, and toted up enough overall points to claim the Grand Championship as well. . .a clean sweep! First time Junior Men's entrant Jordan Silva-Parker showed both great athleticism and gracefulness and scored the second highest total heat waves points (61.5). Our own Mealoha Hooton, already 4 times the Women's Champ came back to win her division again after an extended maternity leave. In the Finals of the Men's Masters Division long time Point Panic regulars BK Holt and Bill Barrelcuda Wise and SoCal Boomer transplant, Nick the Seal Menas traded rides on some of the biggest waves of the day. BK pulled at least 2 well executed 360s, and Nick did his signature high on the lip ride while making butterfly like swoops and rises all the way from outside into the channel. . .but it was Bill's 5 rides from way, way outside Dougie Land on 10+ foot bombs, through the middle barrel, and pulling off at least half a dozen spinners before disappearing into the wedging back wave that won the Masters Champ title for him for the 3rd time. A very good time was had by all. MMK, for the Meet Committee |
